Top 10 Things I Find Amusing About Aging

What Was And What Is Ain't Necessarily The Same Things

1. Yes, I do remember when. I remember phones were party lines. People waited to find you near the phone to talk with you. Folks weren't constantly interrupting conversations and events to check their cells.

2. I used to look forward to one more candle on the birthday cake. Now I bargain with my conscience when I leave a few off.

3. Wisdom isn't so appealing when you see all the grey representing it in the mirror.

4. The workout used to entail trips to the gym and an hour of exercise. Now it entails my getting from point A to point B without becoming winded.

5. My body is better acquainted with the rules of physics than I am. It responds to gravity without any effort on my part.

6. It used to be a good organizational strategy to keep a list of things to do. Now, it's a survival strategy. They will be forgotten unless I write them down.

7. Used to be a senior moment was time you spent with elderly relatives and family friends. Now, well, now it's a cute way to mask a moment of forgetfulness.

8. One could abuse the body's plumbing in younger years. The plumbing waits to pay you back in later years.

9. Medication was something you could blow off or expect to use only for bad colds and such. Now, medication allows you to stave off the reminders of getting old.

10. Sensible shoes were the mark of the truly savvy and down to earth young woman. Now, they're the only thing I can wear to keep my feet from complaining. Well, outside of house slippers, that is.

Bonus:

11. Being carded used to be an insult. Now, it's the high point of any outing.

So maybe hilarity is tempered with a few years. And, perhaps, mirth knows no boundaries but the limitations of age. No matter how you approach aging, you've got to take it with a grain of salt.

Things To Do To Embrace Aging

The Latter Years Are Just As Important As The Formative Years

Once I realized the forever young movement is and always has been a lie and terrible delusion, I understood I had to embrace the inevitable. Inevitable isn't so morbid a thing as you might think. This whole thing of aging isn't about anything I've done wrong. It's not a punishment. It's out of my hands, your hands, or the hands of any powerful government. Coming from a control freak of the highest order, such as myself, that's quite a revelation.

So, each stage of life is kind of a preparatory holding pen for the next sprint in aging. We get a reprieve as we get in our thirties and can many times right the ill use of the previous ten years (fifteen if you count the tweens). Embarking on our first age of enlightenment with good intent, we can surely make it to the next decade, the forties and make them both enjoyable and productive.

Here I am now. I'm not able to go back and do, undo, redo, or not do things that should or shouldn't have been. Now is where I focus. Now is where I expend effort. Everyone knows that the body will expire at some time. Becoming acquainted with the here and now allows that inevitable transition to occur in the path of a life well lived.

Enjoy life to the fullest yet within reason. Find a hobby or two or three to which you can apply yourself. I have started on a few interests later in life than most do and find that age isn't a reason to not do so. Sure, I may have fewer years in which to do them, but enjoy while the fun lasts is my motto. Above all, take time to find amusement with the aging process, it'll go down better than with a spoon full of sugar.

Here are a few things to do to make the most of your latter years:

1. Start fulfilling your bucket list as you are able.

2. Be selective about groups and organizations you join, but join a few.

3. Take up a few hobbies.

4. Establish a health regime within reason and with your doctor's blessings.

5. Not all medications are necessary if you're achieving better health through exercise and diet. Work with your doctor to see what can be eliminated.

6. Take prescription medication as prescribed until your doctor says you can modify doses.

7. Spend time with family, friends and others who bring light into your life.

8. Volunteer.

9. Don't give in to isolation, inactivity and disinterest.

10.Make healthy eating the norm with only the occasional palatal diversion.
